Therapeutic Ultrasound

Healing with the science of sound

Warming Up

Micro-sonic waves penetrate the tissues & create cellular friction, raising the temperature by 3-8 degrees.

Deep warmth allows tendons, ligaments, & muscles to stretch farther & for longer periods of time.

Accelerates the inflammatory phase of healing to begin the regeneration & repair phase faster.

Scars That Change

Scar tissue that is dense, stiff, or thick can significantly alter your pet's range of motion, decreasing their mobility.

Ultrasound Therapy changes the collagen within scar tissue to increase flexibility & decrease bulk.

Particularly helpful for muscle contracture & promoting the "right kind" of scarring after surgery.

Nothing to See Here

We typically think of Ultrasound as the diagnostic imaging machine doctors use to see inside the body, such as during pregnancy.

Therapeutic Ultrasound is not for diagnostic imaging but uses the same technology to facilitate tissue healing & reduce pain.

The Ultrasound Experience

Ultrasonic waves can't travel though air, so it is best to shave each area to be treated & apply a generous amount of ultrasound jelly.

Treatment lasts several minutes for each area & causes a painless, warming sensation. Many patients relax & snuggle while they wait.

For most cases, stretching & exercise commences immediately after treatment.

Faster Flexibility

Ultrasound Therapy creates heat deeper into the soft tissues than external sources, like heat packs, can reach.

Tissues that are warm are better oxygenated & more flexible, allowing for optimal stretching that relieves tightness & improves your pet's range of motion.

Stretching too far or too fast can cause injury, but Ultrasound makes it possible to safely achieve better mobility faster.

Collagen Types 1 & 3

Type 3 collagen is the scaffolding for early stages of wound healing. It's not very strong, but it's imperative for building new tissue.

Type 1 collagen is stronger & more flexible & replaces type 3 during the normal healing process.

If type 3 collagen becomes excessive, it can create thick, rigid scars that limit your pet's movement.

Therapeutic Ultrasound can promote remodeling of the scar's collagen from type 3 to type 1 to reduce its bulk & increase its strength & pliability.

Therapeutic Ultrasound is particularly helpful for addressing Muscle Contracture, Tendinopathies, or recovering from Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) surgery.
